The MLB free agent season has begun.  Almost 150 MLB players became free agents on Sunday, making this a crucial time for Major League teams to play a little “MoneyBall”.

It is often overlooked, but this time of year is one of the more important to keep an eye on as a fan, fantasy owner or simply an innocent bystander.  Here are some of the notable players on the open market right now.

Albert Pujols

Prince Fielder

Mets Shortstop Jose Reyes

Rangers Starter C.J. Wilson

Cardinals Pitcher Edwin Jackson

White Sox Ace Mark Buehrle

Milwaukee reliever Francisco Rodriguez

Atlanta outfielder Nate McLouth

Colorado right-hander Aaron Cook

San Diego Padre right-handers Aaron Harang and Chad Qualls

Padres outfielder Brad Hawpe

Also notable:

Pitcher Javier Lopez agreed to an $8.5 million, two-year contract with the San Francisco Giants rather than become a free agent.

Clubs have until the end of Monday to decide single options and free agents can start signing with teams Thursday.
