MSU Basketball Spartans look to take on UCONN in Germany

MSU to play at Ramstein Air Base

Similar to last year, Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans are trying to take their brand further than the game itself.

Michigan State has recently announced that they will play, pending final approval, UConn at Ramstein Air Base in Germany on November 9, 2012.

This is another milestone the Spartans will reach during the Tom Izzo era that not only pays respect to the game, but pays respect to those defending our country.

What makes this experience so exciting, aside from the opportunity to play for those that protect us in another country, is that ESPN reached out to Michigan State and wanted them to take part in this game.

“I’m thankful that ESPN reached out to us to be a part of this great event,” Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said. “Being a part in the first college basketball game to be played on a military base overseas is truly an honor.”

It’s amazing that ESPN wanted the Spartans, who have not won a national title since 2000, to participate in this game. It really shows the class, competitiveness, and integrity that Tom Izzo and Mark Hollis have instilled into the Michigan State program.

Izzo is taking his team to a military base for the second time in two years, as the Spartans faced UNC last year on an aircraft carrier in San Diego.

“Once again, we are excited about participating in an event that pays tribute and respect to the men and women that serve in our nation’s armed forces,” Spartans AD Mark Hollis said. “During Coach Izzo’s outreach trips to visit and coach our troops overseas, along with our recent experience in San Diego aboard the USS Carl Vinson, we have all developed deep admiration and respect for the men and women that serve in our armed forces.”

Michigan State is starting a tradition that will not only help make Michigan State a bigger name in college basketball, but  starting something that has not been done on the college level at all.

“Everyone associated with the Michigan State basketball program is excited for this unique opportunity,” Izzo said.
