Bryce Harper played 72 games with the Washington Nationals’ minor league affiliate Hagerstown Suns last year and hit .318.  This year he will again be with the Suns, in spirit, via a fan giveaway on August 4.  That night, the first 1000 fans entering the Suns’ Municipal Stadium will receive a Bryce Harper Garden Gnome.  The event is part of the “Bryce Harper Hall of Fame Weekend” at the park, August 3-5, 2012.

Gnomes appear to be on the rise as baseball fan giveaway premiums.  Many teams have used them to boost ticket sales and fan support, including the New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants and many minor league operations.  Earlier this year, the Giants treated fans to the Brian Wilson Garden Gnome – Wilson also played for the Suns who held a Brian Wilson gnome day last year.

I may be wrong, but to me the Wilson edition is actually pretty good – pretty cool as garden gnomes go.  The Bryce Harper?  Not nearly so much.
