40 Points? No Problem! NFL Scoring Barrage Continues (Chart)
Search for Sports Apps! De-fense! De-fense! De-fense! A chant that can be heard at every NFL game. Also, a chant that is rarely answered these days.
Steel Curtain? Purple People Eaters? Orange Crush? Monsters of the Midway? Gone AND forgotten?
With 2 games yet to be played in the opening week of the 2012 NFL season, 4 teams (Redskins, Falcons, Jets and Bears) have already scored 40 points or more – the first time that has happened on opening weekend since 1954.
Post NFL-AFL merger (1970), the season record for a team scoring 40+ points in a game (29) was recorded in 1983. 2011 came close with 28 of these games.
Losing teams also joined in the point parade this week. Six teams have scored at least 22 points in loses – so far. In 2011, there was only one week like that for those in the “L” column.
Here, courtesy of Business Insider Sports Page and Pro-Football-Reference.com, is a look at the number of 40 point NFL games since the merger.
Rule changes favoring offense? Bigger, faster receivers? Whatever the reason, the NFL continues to score big.
