The Chicago Bulls’ Derrick Rose doesn’t boast, isn’t a “flashy” dresser, lets his play do the talking. Rose is remarkably unassuming, humble and genuinely grateful for the support of his fans and where his hard work has led his life.

He was in Chicago Thursday for the launch of his latest signature basketball shoe, the D Rose 3, from adidas.

After a video chronicling his efforts to return to the court following a devastating  ACL injury suffered during the NBA playoffs last April, Rose was clearly overcome with emotion.  When asked to say a few words, a long, room-silencing pause punctuated his feelings. Overcoming his intense emotion and fighting back the tears, Rose opened his heart.

“It’s truly a blessing. With all of the stuff that’s going on in this city, a kid from Englewood has got something positive going on. That makes me feel so good. This shoe is great; all this is great. But I can’t explain this. I can’t.  I went through so much. To have, like, true fans, that means a lot to me. And I know it means a lot to my family, because we’re not supposed to be here. At all. But God made the way.”

“This is truly unreal,” he said. “I’m just happy that I have true fans out there.”
