The 2012-2013 NBA season begins tonight, so let’s get the serious stuff out of the way.

The Miami Heat are the clear favorites to repeat as champs at this point. They have the game’s best player and have, at least on paper, improved the “supporting cast”. LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh have new playmates in Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis this time around. They still lack overall team size, but could be even better this year.

A step down from the Heat are the Los Angeles Lakers, OKC Thunder, San Antonio Spurs and Boston Celtics. The Lakers and Thunder may take some time to meld the new additions to their rosters (the Lakers’  Steve Nash, Dwight Howard the most notable) and will probably be good now, very good down the line. The Celtics are generally older, but still talented and the Spurs just seem to show up every year.

The Chicago Bulls will try to hang around waiting for former MVP Derrick Rose to return from injury. The New York Knicks have lost Amar’e Stoudemire for several weeks already and, until proven otherwise, they are still the Knicks. The L.A. Clippers should be improved and ready to move up, if their younger players continue to improve.

The road to the title is paved with all kinds of potholes – desire or lack thereof, injury, fatigue(see older players), schedule and team matchups – but for right now, it’s the Heat and then everyone else.

To compliment tonight’s opening games, including the Celtics-Heat and Mavericks-Lakers clashes, take a few minutes to enjoy this blooper mix from the 2011-2012 season.
