  • 1906 - Henry Mathewson (NY Giants, Christy’s brother) walks 14 men
  • 1908 - ChicagoWhite Sox pitcher Ed Walsh beats the Detroit Tigers 6-1 for his 40th victory of the season
  • 1912 - Boston Red Sox defeat A’s 3-0 for then AL season record 105th win
  • 1921 - The World Series is broadcast on the radio for the first time – a game was between the New York Giants and the New York Yankees
  • 1922 - The Yankees and Giants play an infamous 3-3 tie World Series game
  • 1932 - The Detroit Falcons introduce a their new name (Redwings) and uniforms to the city of Detroit
  • 1952 - In the sixth NHL All-Star Game, the 1st Team ties the 2nd Team 1-1 at Detroit
  • 1953 - The New York Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 4-3, winning a record 5th consecutive World Series, 4 games to 2. The Yanks’ Billy Martin sets a record with 12 hits in the series
  • 1957 - Britain-Ireland win the 12th Ryder Cup, 7½-4½
  • 1969 - Tom Dempsey of the NFL New Orleans Saints kicks 55-yard field goal
  • 1983 - Wayne Gretzky begins a consecutive game scoring streak that will cover 51 games, ending January 27, 1984
  • 1985 - Head football coach Eddie Robinson of Grambling State University wins his 324th game, breaking the record set three years earlier by Paul (Bear) Bryant of Alabama
  • 1991 - Fresno State ties the NCAA record with 49 points in a quarter, routing New Mexico 94-17
  • 1997 - Davis Love III wins golf’s Buick challenge, shooting a 267, and Annika Sorenstam wins LPGA CoreStates Betsy King Classic
  • 2001 - The San Francisco Giants’ Barry Bonds hits his 71st and 72nd home runs of the season, breaking Mark McGuire’s record
  • 2003 - The Chicago Cubs beat the Atlanta Braves to win their first postseason series since the 1908 World Series
  • 2004  -  The St. Louis Cardinals hit 5 HRs to tie the NL postseason record, beating the Dodgers 8-3
