Gregg Popovich is at it again.

San Antonio Spurs head coach has decided that the health and future of his team is worth more than an early season “big” game.  Popovich has decided to send Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili (and Danny Green) back home to Texas as the rest of the team traveled to Miami to meet the Heat in tonight’s TNT matchup.

The Big Three plus Green average a combined 57.9 points per game, but as reported in the Express-News:

In retrospect, Popovich was probably hinting at the decision to come before Wednesday’s game in Orlando, when he admitted the most road-heavy November in team history was taking its toll on his players. ‘We’re getting tired,’ Popovich said. ‘We’ve had a six-day trip and a 10-day trip. Usually you don’t have that in one month.’

So, the Spurs – already without injured small forward Kawhi Leonard and Stephen Jackson – will take on the defending NBA champs with a roster of just nine players. The Spurs have been on their current six-game trip since the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and tonight’s game will be their 12th road contest of the month and 4th in five nights.

Popovich’s decision definitively states that he considers his team and the rest of the season more important than a non-conference, nationally televised TNT game – no matter how BIG.

Kudos, Gregg!
